Eight Creative Ways to Reuse Milk Jugs at Home
When I was growing up, my mom and grandmother were the recycling and upcycling queens; they had a practical use for everything from food containers to zippers. Thank goodness I had them to guide me because that has been an unlimited source of inspiration for my blog.
Whether you are looking to save money, save the planet, or be more resourceful, upcycling (or “creative reuse”) is one amazing way to do this. I love the challenge of reusing things creatively but with plastic milk jugs in particular there is almost no limit!
How does one go about repurposing a milk jug?
Grill Utensil Caddy
Take off the top while keeping its switch intact. The bottom can now be used for holding forks, tongs, and brushes among other grilling tools. The firm jug makes it possible for you to carry your cooking implements wherever you want them and it’s also simple to wash clean hence a game-changer to any barbecue master.
Scooper
A handy, dandy little scooper can be made by cutting a milk jug up that can pick up things like dog food, soil, or nails.
Furniture Sliders
Indeed, slice off the bottom of four cut milk jugs by using a utility knife and then employ them as furniture sliders. All you do is place each furniture leg on its slider, and the plastic will slide easily on nearly every kind of floor. Apart from their effectiveness in comparison to those sold in stores, these are also free!
Plastic Storage Box
Milk jugs can be used to make this cute plastic storage box for keeping your odds and ends in it. Find out how below.
Plant Tray
There’s nothing worse than watering a houseplant only to have dirty water drain all over the place. Simply get rid of approximately 3 inches from the bottom of a plastic milk jug and utilize it as a tray to quench the thirst of your plants. Adding marbles to the tray helps keep plants moist by slowing water evaporation from the tray for plants that need constant moisture.
Ice Pack
Make an extra-large ice pack for your cooler using a milk jug. Pour water into an empty one until it’s almost full, put back the cap, and freeze until solid. This will stay frozen much longer than a bag of ice would, and you can drink the cold water as it melts!
Camping Lantern
Are you going camping? A gallon-sized milk jug of water works great as a lantern or nightlight. Just attach a headlamp to the jug so that its light faces inward, and it will give off soft diffused lighting.
A Mini Greenhouse
Milk jugs make excellent mini greenhouses for extending the growing season at both ends. With this in mind, cut out their bottoms and place them over your plants (bonus: they’ll keep bugs & slugs away!).
